romantic or quirky restaurants near red river gorge?

I plan to be staying at the Natural Bridge State Park soon. After a day of hiking, my wife asked me to find a place for dinner, something special. We often like quirky or nice places that aren%26#39;t chain restaurants. I was just wondering what%26#39;s available within a half hour of the lodge.

Its not exactly romantic but their is a good pizza place over at Red River Gorge. It is called Miguels Pizza. It is a bright yellow building so its unique. They also have rock climbing gear and other souvenirs. If you want to read some reviews the link is:

There is just not much around that area. I absolutely second the rec on Miguel%26#39;s Pizza. It is the very definition of quirky, with rock climbers camping out in tents behind the restaurant. The pizza is great. My only other suggestion would be the restaurant at the Natural Bridge Lodge. The state park system has greatly upgraded the food served at the state resort parks over the past few years. Great views, too.

Lexington is less than an hour from the park.

Churchill downs

We are planning a trip to Louisville and Lexington the first week of June. We are looking forward to attending the races at Churchill Downs. Does anyone have any suggestions for making our day special? My husband loves horses, horse racing and it%26#39;s been his dream to go to the races at Churchill Downs. Would you suggest doing general admission or is it possible to get ';special'; seating in the clubhouse. Any other suggestions?

Unless you are going on Father%26#39;s Day, seating should be no problem. You should definitely plan to go to the Derby Museum next door. He will love it!

General admission to the clubhouse allows you to sit on the ground level which means you can only see about half of the track. I would suggest you pay a little extra for third floor clubhouse seats which gives a better view of the whole track. Would definately suggest trying to add the

Derby Museum.

Information on Headliners?

Considering coming to Louisville for a show @ Headliners. Wondering if the locals could provide any information, observations and general comments on this venue?

I%26#39;m interested in all kinds of information, but I guess the primary one is how good/bad of a music venue (acoustics, sight lines, is it seating or SRO), etc.

While any other info is appreciated, some of my other information I would love to get includes:

1) What%26#39;s the general area it%26#39;s in like;

2) Does the club offer food (and if yes, is it any good?);

3) Parking and/or walking;

4) As I%26#39;ll be coming in from out of town - any close hotels/motels (and if yes, recommendations?);

5) Is there other stuff in the neighborhood - restaurants, etc (i.e. can we go nearby %26amp; eat or would it be eat elsewhere and then drive to the show).

And, of course anything else you locals think is worthwhile to pass along.

Information on Headliners?

Greetings, I%26#39;ve been a musician for over 30 years in this town and I admit, I%26#39;ve never been to Headliners. However, my 2 teenagers have been several times. There is limited parking; often people drop others off there or share rides. There is some parking on the street close to the venue (Payne Ave). It%26#39;s not a bad area, just a bit ';off the beaten path'; by an old distillery that%26#39;s been renovated and has offices in it. The place is only a music venue, period. Acoustically, it may be odd since it%26#39;s an old exposed brick type building. I hear mixed reviews about that! There is no seating in the main music floor, a couple couches and a bar upstairs. No food. However, you are just blocks away from lively Baxter Avenue and Bardstown Road with a plethora of good restaurants and bars.

There is a place right down the road called Baxter Station which is really a nice restaurant- reasonable with a large menu and casual. Parking can be tricky, but that%26#39;s the area! You can make a reservation as well on www.opentable.com

Oops...forgot to add that you are just 2 minutes from any downtown hotel. I suggest you try priceline. Most people I know get the Galt House or the Hyatt for around $50.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply. You pretty well answered all my questions and I appreciate the Priceline suggestion/information. I%26#39;ve used Priceline in the past and, if we decide to do the Louisville show, will probably use it.

Linda is spot on. There%26#39;s also a great neighborhood bar within walking distance, the Spring Street Grill and Bar, that serves what many consider to be the best Buffalo wings in town.

I%26#39;ve always gone to Baxter Station before shows at Headliners.... more than once, the artists are there eating too.

Louisville KOA

Does anybody know if they provide transportation for customers to the Kentucky Derby? The one in Hot Springs does take a shuttle to the races daily.

Have you tried calling the KOA? I doubt if they do but there is a large Holiday Inn a couple of hundred yards away that would have cabs... You do know that the KOA is in Indiana across the river. Right?

Derby 09 - taxis?

Hi! We managed to score two Derby tickets (at face value!). We%26#39;re trying to do this as cheap as possible and with as little driving as possible. We%26#39;re looking at staying in Sellersburg, IN. Is there a chance we could take a cab there and back on both Oaks and Derby days? Or are there any reasonable hotels (less than 350/night) with a free shuttle? I%26#39;ve looked at the Derby packages but they all seem to come with tickets and obviously we don%26#39;t need those.

Call the local cab company in Sellersburg IN.

If there isn%26#39;t one, then you%26#39;re probably not going to get a cab to come all the way up to Sellersburg from Louisville and back, without offering up mega-bucks. Especially on the 2 busiest days of the year.

As for a hotel, you%26#39;ll just have to find one the old fashioned way. Start calling them all.

You could stay in Sellersburg and then drive in to town and park downtown or at the Fairgrounds and do the Park and Ride Deal on TARC (our bus system) for $5 a person

Any Lunch Recommendations Downtown on a Weekend?

I%26#39;m going to be spending a weekend in Louisville soon. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant that will be open for lunch on a Sat. or Sun.? I will be staying at the downtown Hyatt and would like something sort of nearby.

I%26#39;ve been to Louisville before and eaten at Jack Fry%26#39;s, Toast on Market, etc. and am familiar with the area. All suggestions will be welcome!

J Graham%26#39;s Cafe at the Brown Hotel- great little breakfast and lunch spot. Try their traditional ';Hot Brown';

Cunningham%26#39;s on 4th- a Louisville tradition...not my cup of tea, though.

My least favorite restaurant is the Bristol downtown. You%26#39;ve been warned.

Bistro 301 is nice on a Saturday. Personally, I like the Bristol!

Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse - Bar area or private room?

we are coming to town for my wife%26#39;s 30th bday and there will be 12 of us in all. we are definitely eating here on saturday night but our party is not a private room kind of crowd. i would like to be in the bar area (hopefully with some live entertainment) but not sure what the seating is like in there. is it all booths or are there tables? if there are booths, do they seat four or six? just wondering if we could fit six in one booth and six in another or possibly put some tables together to get all 12 together. also is there a way to find out what the live entertainment will be? much appreciated.

thanks for the input. i called and they said the bar area is first come, first serve (12 was possible but probably not likely on a saturday night). piano player starts at 6:30 with a live band starting at 9:30. we are going to be in a private room in the back anyway so i don%26#39;t think we%26#39;ll hear the music anyway. oh well.

If the live music at Jeff Ruby%26#39;s doesn%26#39;t work out, I%26#39;d suggest you see what%26#39;s going on at Stevie Ray%26#39;s Blues Club after dinner. The club is only about 3 blocks away.
