snowboarding in KY

Also wondering if anybody knows where the best mountain is for snowboarding in the winter here?

Thanks!

snowboarding in KY

You%26#39;ll probably want to drive to West Virginia to find that. There is a place called Snowshoe.

The most local hill near Louisville is Paoli Peaks. Typically, they have to rely on snow making equipment and pray for some cold weather.

snowboarding in KY

Perfect North Slopes just outside of Cincinnati is a slighty larger operation than Paoli Peaks, but its still just a glorified hillside with blown snow, they do a good job with what the have to work with, as does Paoli. But if your used to real boarding or skiing you wont be impressed

In town for the 12/13 UK vs. Indiana game bar/food advice?

What%26#39;s the best place to go before the game (sports bar, etc)?

What%26#39;s a good place to grab a steak after the game?

Any bars with live blues or rock downtown near the Hyatt?

    Thanks for your help!

In town for the 12/13 UK vs. Indiana game bar/food advice?

There are tons of places in the immediate vicinity of Rupp Arena, and all of them will be crowded before the game. Cheapside and Bluegrass Tavern next to the old courthouse, Hugo%26#39;s and McCarthy%26#39;s Irish Bar on Upper, Yesterday%26#39;s in the Lexington Center, Brooklyn Sports Bar (and several new bars) in the Victorian Square, and Sawyer%26#39;s in the Festival Market Building. Pedways connect a lot of these places.

As for a steak after the game, if you stay downtown DeShae%26#39;s would be good, though undoubtedly crowded. Other good places with walking distance are Dudley%26#39;s on Maxwell Steet and Jonathan%26#39;s at the Gratz Park Inn.

If you leave downtown to get dinner, try Malone%26#39;s on Tates Creek Road in the Lansdowne Shops.

I%26#39;m not big on live music, but there is usually a band at Cheapside in the evenings.

That could be one UGLY basketball game.

where to shop in Lexington Kentucky

    shopping

Depends on what you%26#39;re looking for. Fayette Mall is the largest mall in the state. Hamburg has lots of shops. Clay Ave for eclectic boutique type shops.

    shopping

Thank you for your help! I will explore all of them. Happy Holidays

What shops on Clay Ave do you like for Christmas gifts, lexingtongal?

And have you been to My Favorite Things in hamburg?

(btw, it%26#39;s a book store, but I really like Joseph-Beth Booksellers for gifts as well.)

I love Peggy%26#39;s. I can always find a gift there and can find something in a broad price range. I also like the Paper Weight although there inventory has dramatically decreased.

    I%26#39;ll check out Peggy%26#39;s. Thanks..

I shopped at Peggy%26#39;s and liked it. Her store was crammed full of Christmas product; I wouldn%26#39;t know what it looks like any other time of the year.

I needed an individual Christmas card. They sent me across the street to the Paper Weight where their selection of individual Christmas cards was inadequate. The Paper Weight%26#39;s showroom looked unfinished---like a store that was getting ready to open but not ready to open yet.

    Need Vacation Ideas/Lousiville Area

Planning a trip to Kentucky, kids range from 13 to adult. We are thinking the Lousiville area, want to go the horse race track. We like outdoor stuff and also need best ideas for lodging - the cheaper the better. BUT I don%26#39;t want a tent! A cabin would be great as long as bedding is furnished, don%26#39;t have room for all that. What are the must sees?

    Need Vacation Ideas/Lousiville Area

Must/Should sees: Churchill Downs , Mammoth Cave (100 miles South of The Ville), Louisville Slugger Museum, Louisville Bats AAA baseball game

    Need Vacation Ideas/Lousiville Area

If you wanted to drive farther west, I%26#39;d recommend Mammoth Cave National Park; they have adorable little cottages and cabins there; lots of great hiking, canoeing on the Green River, biking, etc.

Visit the Kentucky State Park website to see the accomodations in any of our wonderful state parks: lodges or cabins.

Louisville is a BIG CITY, so you%26#39;ll have all the cultural amenities, but there%26#39;s also Otter Creek Park with cabins available. Except for Churchill Downs and the Derby Museum, you%26#39;ll have to drive to Lexington/Midway/Versailles for the horse stuff.

You might also enjoy staying overnight at Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill; a unique experience...

I highly recommend the Stephen Foster Story in Bardstown, it is so worth the drive! It%26#39;s an outdoor play in an ampitheater and it%26#39;s a tradition for the summer time around here!

    Have fun!

Thank you so much - we were wanting to see an outdoor play!

    My recommendations are:

    Derby Museum at Churchill Downs:

Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum (right in downtown):

My husband is arriving at Lexington airport on 12/23 at 10 pm and needs to get to Cincinnati. The taxi limo, cab and rental car options aren%26#39;t really feasible, so we%26#39;re looking for someone to share a ride with. Anyone going that way at that time?

    Need ride-share to Cincinnati

I am sorry that I can%26#39;t help you out more. Maybe try posting this in the Cincy forum as well or on Craigslist. It seems there should be someone who would be going on to Cincy. If I still lived in Lexington, I would drive him myself for a reduced rate since I am unemployed...lol.

Traveling to the Kentucky Horse Park.

Recently, I had the pleasure of traveling to the Kentucky Horse Park just outside of lexington. It was still fall when I traveled to the area and it was beautiful. The one thing that made the trip though was my stay at a Fairfield Inn and Suites in Georgetown. While this may not seem like much of a big deal, the staff and amenities available onsite really helped me relax after a long day at the Horse Park. marriott.com/hotels/… . Thats a link to the hotel%26#39;s website.

    Big South Fork Scenic Railway

Hi, I%26#39;m considering taking my kids on this train trip this summer. Can anyone advise about this trip...is it truly a scenic ride? I haven%26#39;t been able to find much information on it. How many stops are there? It%26#39;s only 16 miles round trip, but it is 3 hours. Where is most of that time spent, and is there much to do?

  • scathing reviews of le deauville

It%26#39;s interesting to hear the opinions of others regarding a place I think I know fairly well....

Restaurant le Deauville has taken some hits by TA reviewers writing bitterly negative reviews.

One person reports that the bread was delivered to their table ';half frozen.'; Hmmmm.....

When we%26#39;re there the bread comes to the table so hot we cannot touch it without letting it cool first.

I%26#39;ve been in and out of Le Deauville many, many times without complaint.

    I must be lucky....

    scathing reviews of le deauville

I have only been 3 or 4 times, but I have no complaints. Food and service were very good and worth the price I paid. It is one of my favorite. Let me just say that I have moved to Atlanta and there is good food here...but not many that offer the value in Lexington. Gumbo Ya Ya...say no more.

    scathing reviews of le deauville

Oh puh-leeze, my friend, Bourbon %26#39;n Toulouse kicks Gumbo Ya Ya butt all over the place (although I%26#39;ll admit, I%26#39;m kind of partial to the Gumbo YaYa white chili...).

    Bourbon n' Toulouse???

Has anyone been to Bourbon n%26#39; Toulouse in Chevy Chase? They have not been reviewed, but I%26#39;ve heard a lot about them. Thanks for the help!

    Bourbon n' Toulouse???

Yes. It%26#39;s very good and very inexpensive!

    Bourbon n' Toulouse???

It%26#39;s one of my favorite places in town. Locally owned by great people, food that warms you up, it%26#39;s just great. I am usually there at least once a week! If you like spicy foods, be sure to add the hot sauces to whatever dishes you order. They really add to the flavors.

I don%26#39;t know this place. Maybe I%26#39;ll give it a try....

Love it!!! They have one downtown in Triangle Centre and I ate there quite a bit for lunch when I worked downtown. Chicken Sauce Piquant was my favorite.

Southwest Crayfish Etouffee is the best.

Has anyone tried this new restaurant called The Dish on Ashland Ave? Their online menu looks pretty good. They don%26#39;t serve lunch. www.thedishlexington.com

    the dish

I have not dined their mind you but I frequent several bars that are close to this. For the past several weeks, there has hardly been anyone there and the waiters just standing around this bar stand. It appears pretty unprofessional. I would imagine it is hard times for restaurants with this economy. They have a menu posted at the door and it seemed like pretty typical cuisine and slightly above average prices.

    the dish

I haven%26#39;t been yet. I have friends that have been 3 times. Twice they loved it and the last time they loathed it. They said it was packed the last time they went and the wait staff couldn%26#39;t handle it.

It seems like that location is just jinxed.

Is this the location where the Grotto restaurant was before it closed?

No, it%26#39;s on the next block where Rossi%26#39;s originally was. I believe Le Bistro was the name of the last restaurant.

I have been there, and oh my goodness, it is divine. I got a filet with a crayfish sauce. Definitely worth going. Much better food than some downtown.

Well, we tried it. There was nothing special about it. We have no interest in going back to The Dish.

They are open on Monday nights when some others downtown are closed....

    Louisville area hotels

I am searching for nice hotels in Louisville around the 465/65 exchange. Anyone got any ideas?

    Louisville area hotels

i think you might mean 265. there are loads of hotels just north of the exchange--it%26#39;s not too far from the airport--mostly chains. i had some family stay at the hilton garden inn just off i-65. i thought it was pretty nice.

    Louisville area hotels

Yes I did mean 265. Sorry.

There are a few just north of I65/265 intersection. Holiday Inn and I think A refurbished one next to Outback on Fern Valley Rd. ( i can%26#39;t think of the name of it) Maybe County Inn Suites. There would also be a few South of the Intersection in Brooks, Ky. Also Check any around the Fairgrounds area. not too far from where you want.

Have you had any luck, CincyBeachBum, in finding a hotel in the area?

I totally agree with the other posts that you can find a WIDE variety of facilities on or around the Kentucky Fair %26amp; Expo Center on Phillips Lane. Do a ';distance'; search on www.yellowpages.com under Hotels/Motels for ';Phillips Lane'; in Louisville - you%26#39;ll get a TON of options.

Looking for a good salad bar in Bowling Green...

I travel a lot for work and all day I have to be pretty sociable---when it%26#39;s time for dinner, most of the time I just want to grab a salad from a grocery salad bar in the area and take it back to my hotel room and watch the free HBO (it beats eating out at a nice restaurant in a strange city by myself). Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice grocery store salad bar? The closest Whole Foods with salad bar is in Nashville--and that%26#39;s a little too far just for a salad. I%26#39;ll be in Bowling Green for a couple of days and then I have to spend about 3-4 days in Hopkinsville, and I%26#39;ll be looking for the same there. If anyone has any salad bar suggestions or otherwise ideas for a healthy fare, I%26#39;d be grateful! Thanks!

Looking for a good salad bar in Bowling Green...

Unfortunately, there are no grocery store salad bars in Bowling Green, and very few salad bars at all. And we really are not into healthy eating.

However, any of the Kroger groceries have pre-made salads and other assorted foods for individuals to take home. And many of the restaurants have take out.

The best salad in town is downtown at Mariah%26#39;s Restaurant, and their menu is www.mariahs.com. You can actually order via internet and pick up or (for a fee) have it delivered to your hotel room. The house salad includes oven-roasted black-eyed peas. It is the only way I will eat black-eyed peas. Mariah%26#39;s has a separate entrance for take-out meals.

Another restaurant that has a good take-out service is Rafferty%26#39;s. Their menu is at www.raffertys.com. The last time I checked, they do not have internet ordering. But I have their phone number programmed into my cell phone and always call in what I want.

And if you do want to venture out to eat at a restaurant alone, Verdi Restaurant downtown on the square is the best in town.

    Location Suggestions for Family Reunion?

    Hi--

I%26#39;m looking for an area in Kentucky, Southern Indiana or Southern Ohio to have a family reunion in Summer 2009 for about 25 people (of all ages).

We have families coming from Georgia and Chicago, so we%26#39;re looking for a place in-between. We%26#39;ve had reunions in Gatlinburg and LOVED the area, so we%26#39;re looking for something with similar scenery, attractions and cabin-style lodging. (mountains, amusements, shopping, shows, pools, etc.)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Location Suggestions for Family Reunion?

Kentucky has some great state parks with cabins available. In fact, my family had a reunion several years ago at Kentucky Dam State Park in one of the executive cabins. Check out parks.ky.gov.

Is anyone flying in, or is everyone driving?

The Cincinnati airport is actually located in northern Kentucky and serves as a semi-hub for Delta. The Louisville airport has several Southwest flights at good prices. If everyone is driving, you have more options.

    Location Suggestions for Family Reunion?

Thanks for the response. The area you mentioned looks nice, but doesn%26#39;t seem to have a lot of nearby attractions (go carts, bungie, water slides, theater, etc...). Perhaps I missed something. Thanks again.

Whew. You%26#39;re really going to be hard pressed to find a Gatlinburg or Branson sort of area here.

Again, are you driving or flying, or both?

If some are flying, then go to Louisville. It%26#39;s a great city, and lots of entertainment, shopping, and Kentucky Kingdom for kids. Or Cincinnati and King%26#39;s Island.

If you%26#39;re driving, you have the option of Holiday World in southern Indiana.

  • Am Moving to Somerset from Southern Calif

Am going to be in Somerset for a week to close the deal on a home I am purchasing.

Am wondering what the best hotel for a single female to stay in is.

Any reccomendations for restaurants would be great too.

Can hardly wait to get out of the fast lane, and meet some nice, friendly people, and live in the land of my ancestors.

Am Moving to Somerset from Southern Calif

My sister in law moved to Somerset fairly recently. She seems pretty happy there- the lake is definitely a perk. For a single female, I highly recommend the Doolin House for a stay. A young husband and wife chef team run the place and the breakfasts are fabulous! Rooms are clean and reasonable and it%26#39;s convenient. Take your own bottle of vino- the city is dry. You will get much personal attention this way and no doubt many questions answered as they are ';transplants'; to the area as well and established a lovely business over the years. Best of luck to you!

  • Louisville on a Sunday Night 1/4

Hey there. Is there a ';Sunday'; night spot in Louisville? I haven%26#39;t found much online at all. A friend told me main street lounge used to be good, but she wasn%26#39;t sure. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I usally like a low key lounge or hipster scene.

    See you Sunday! - Ashley

Louisville on a Sunday Night 1/4

There%26#39;s not a particular Sunday spot.

Long Shot Tavern (lower Frankfort Ave.) - The Merry Pranksters play lots of Dead and other jam band/70%26#39;s covers. Attracts a tie-dyed crowd who bring their dogs to the bar.

Seidenfaden%26#39;s (Breckinridge %26amp; Vine in Germantown) - Dive with a hipster crowd. They usually show old cult movies on Sundays. But that said, they may decide not to do it tonight. Call %26amp; check first. They aren%26#39;t big on schedules.

The Nachbar (Germantown) may have something going on. Call %26amp; check first. Hipster crowd. Good beer selection.

The Magnolia ';Mag'; Bar (Magnolia St. in Old Louisville) - Hipsters %26amp; piercings. Probably nothing going on. Best jukebox in Louisville. Seem to recall Sunday is free pizza night.

The Dark Star (Frankfort Ave.) usually has a decent crowd on any given night. Less hipster, more neighborhood bar.

Check ';The Louisville Eccentric Observer'; and/or ';Velocity'; for a listing of live music and happenings. They are both online.

    Help with our planning please!

We need help planning our 2009 summer vacation. We will be leaving on a Thursday afternoon and staying in Lebanon, Indiana that night and then leaving for Kentucky early Friday morning.

What are some activities we should make sure we hit before we leave Kentucky. Here are some of the areas we are thinking of visting:

    Civil War Museum - Bardstown

Jim Beam American Outpost - Clermont

Camp wildcat Civil War Battlefield - London (we are unsure about this since we can%26#39;t find any reviews or even a website)

Cumberland Falls State Park - Corbin

Cumberland Gap National Historic Park - Middlesboro

Mammoth Cave National Park (we are also unsure about this since we have read some bad reviews on the crowds and lack of cave beauty, I am afraid our kids will not enjoy it much since we have been in other caves before and have seen many pretty things)

Is there anything else we should see or things on our list that we should avoid? We will be arriving in Bardstown around 9 am friday and would like to be close to Cumberland Gap that night so we can do it Saturaday morning and then head on to the Smokies.

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!!

    Help with our planning please!

I should have probably mentioned that we like hiking (3/4 mile max with the kids), historical sights, and waterfalls. We like to avoid tourist traps and crowds as much as possible.

    Help with our planning please!

A couple of years ago we did a Kentucky trip and this is what we did. We love history and the outdoors.

    Corvette Museum

Mammoth Cave National Park- kids did enjoy it

Louisville Slugger Bat company and museum

    Lincoln%26#39;s Birthplace and museum

Shaker Village- great food at their restaurant

Paddle boat ride on Kentucky River

Kentucky Horse Park and Museum in Lexington

    Enjoy your trip!!

My experience in Kentucky is somewhat limited, but I am very familiar with Mammoth Cave. I think your kids would enjoy it as long as everyone understands that Mammoth is known for its size, not its formations. Since you are interested in seeing the formations (who isn%26#39;t?), I%26#39;d recommend taking a tour that will put you in the drapery room. The new entrance, Grand Avenue, and Frozen Niagara tours are three that will fit the bill. The Grand Avenue is the most inclusive and covers around 4 miles and lasts about 4 hours. There are lunch and bathroom breaks. The Frozen Niagara is much shorter and pretty much shows you mainly the formations. We also saw Diamond Caverns, Kentucky Down Under, and Beech Bend Park.

If you decide to go to Mammoth, be sure to have advance reservations, as the tours sell out quickly.

It seems like you have somewhat limited time, so you might be fine tuning your list a bit. I%26#39;m sure locals will help you in this regard. Have fun planning.

Here%26#39;s some info %26amp; directions to Camp Wildcat. It%26#39;s actually between London %26amp; Livingston.

    fs.fed.us/r8/…wildcat.shtml

You%26#39;re going to have a very, very busy trip, indeed. How old are the kids?

Mammoth Cave park in the summer offers a special introduction to caving just for kids. It is usually on Saturday mornings, but sometimes more often.

Also, on the northern side of the Green River, the park offers lots of hiking trails.

You could easily swing down to Bowling Green and see the Corvette Museum. If you%26#39;re planning on driving I-65 to the Cumberland Parkway via Glasgow to get to Cumberland Gap, then the Vette Museum is only a short bit out of your way.

You might also consider stopping around Pineville and the narrows of the Cumberland River there.

Sorry I should have mentioned the kids are 6, 4, and 2. We went to Yellowstone last year and found that the 3/4 mile mark is as far as we can go.

The Trog Tour at Mammoth Cave is the one for children, and the age limits are 8-12.

I%26#39;d recommend for you the Discovery Tour or the Frozen Niagara Tour. By the way, all the tours are detailed on the Mammoth Cave Park website, nps.gov/maca/ (cave tours at www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/cavetours.htm).

Coming down I-65, at the Horse Cave Exit, the Kentucky Down Under theme park might be interesting. It even has a petting zoo where the kids can interact with kangaroos. Their website is www.kdu.com.

With children that young, please be aware that the drive from Mammoth Cave Park to Cumberland Gap is going to be 5 hours. For me, it is a beautiful drive, but I%26#39;m not 4 years old (although there are those who tell me I sometimes act like it - lol).

Bardstown to Cumberland Falls to Cumberland Gap is, in and of itself, a long day of driving. I%26#39;ve driven from Cumberland Gap to Cumberland Falls, and it is also a beautiful drive for me. But a significant part goes through Daniel Boone National Forest and is a winding two-lane road.

The driving is really of no big deal for our kids. We drove through the Bear Tooth Mountains on the way home from Yellowstone and the kids were fine. They also like to look at the scenery. We ended up driving 16 hours straight with the 3 kids from Montana to Wisconsin in 1 day only stopping for gas and food. So, we are okay with a drive.

We are looking for senic and historical activities while in Kentucky only because after the Smokies we are heading to Daytona Beach and t.hen Walt Disney World. So there will be enough kid activities later in the trip.

We are going to skip the Wildcat Battlefieldas it is out of the way and doesn%26#39;t look like much. Are the Cumberland falls (all we would do would be to look at the one main falls with the moonbow and then leave) worth the stop or should we keep going?

I think the falls are worth it. The moonbow is only in the evening, however, and the moon has to be out that night. But even during the day, the falls are quite impressive.

There is a lodge at the falls where they serve a nice buffet breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

It sounds like your kids are great at travelling, so you should be able to enjoy the drive. There are some beautiful sights.

Thanks for all the help. With all the comments I have gotten in the Kentucky and Smoky Mountain forums, we have decided to seperate our Florida trip from the plans.

We will do Disney World and the ocean this year and then devote the next trip to this area so we have more time!

    Thanks to everyone!

Hey there. I%26#39;m coming to your town this Sunday %26amp; was wondering if there is a ';Sunday'; night place. I will be staying at they Hyatt downtown. i%26#39;m taking my daughther on a college tour here at the end of the month.. not sure if we will have a car, as it%26#39;s so close to the airport. any suggestions on places for lunch or dinner? is the town closeby to the university?

    univeristy of louisville

Depending upon how long you are going to be in Louisville and how much of the area you want to see, you may want to rent a car. You wouldn%26#39;t want to walk from U of L to downtown. It%26#39;s probably 3 miles or so.

The Granville Inn Bar %26amp; Grill is within walking distance of campus. Maybe 3-4 blocks. Good burgers %26amp; pub grub.

    www.oldlouisville.com/Restaurants/Granville/

A little further away, in ';Old Louisville'; (the area between U of L and downtown) is The Third Avenue Cafe. It%26#39;s probably about 10 blocks. I%26#39;d take a cab. http://www.thirdavecafe.com/

Some dinner options that are reasonably close to campus. Also in Old Louisville. I%26#39;d suggest a cab rather than trying to walk from campus. Especially in the evening.

    Amici Cafe

    http://www.amicicafelouisville.com/

    Carly Rae%26#39;s

    www.louisvillediner.com/menuDetail.php?id=282

There are also lots of dining options downtown or in the area around Bardstown Road (also referred to as The Highlands).

If you%26#39;re staying overnight, there are several B%26amp;B%26#39;s in the Old Louisville area. Just do a google search on Old Louisville B%26amp;B%26#39;s.

There are plenty of hotels in the airport/fairgrounds area. Just be aware that it%26#39;s fairly industrial. Not really much in the way of non-chain restaurants etc.

Best of luck! My husband went to U of L and I attended grad school there.

    univeristy of louisville

I agree with the previous poster. Depends on how long you are here and how much you want to see. Unfortunately, Louisville isn%26#39;t all that friendly for non-drivers. Also, more dining options if you have a car and head to the the Highlands area though the restaurants mentioned in Old Louisville are certainly satisfactory.

You can likely get a rental at the airport pretty inexpensively. I just rented a car for an upcoming trip to San Francisco for $19 per day (plus tax) via Priceline.

    First, I love your moniker....willbebroke!!!

I, too, graduated from UofL and I transferred from a small college which would have left me broke. When you say ';end of the month'; I%26#39;m thinking COLD! Check weather.com before you come. We have kooky weather and it changes daily.

I second Third Avenue Cafe for great food and fun atmosphere. You may want to check with the University as well; often they offer discount housing for visiting families. At several places I visited with my daughter last year, special housing was reserved in grad dorms and apartment units.

Best of luck to you. It was a fun but stressful time yet when they find the right ';fit'; it%26#39;s terrific!

Thanks all for your information.. I guess i will rent a car. We are only there for one night. She is meeting with the lacrosse team and then we are going to the louisville/WVU bball game.

You%26#39;ll be better off with the car, for sure.

U of L is very close to Churchill Downs also, so you may want to try to squeeze in a visit there. No live racing in January, but you can do the tour through the Kentucky Derby Museum adjacent to Gate 1 at 700 Central Ave.

I like a restaurant just on the other side of I-65 from campus called The Cottage Inn. Arguably the best fried chicken in town. They use pans, so it%26#39;ll take a minimum of 30 minutes but it%26#39;s worth it. It%26#39;s at Eastern Parkway and Bradley.

My personal favorite local tourist destination is the Louisville Slugger Museum %26amp; Factory at 8th %26amp; Main downtown. You can watch them make a baseball bat and even order special request models from a number of size choices.

Good luck on your visit and enjoy the basketball game. The tickets are VERY hard to get!

    supermarket downtown

Are there any supermarkets in the downtown area?

What are the names of supermarkets in Louisville?

Is Pci-Pac a major chain? How about City View Market?

Need smoked turkey, bottled water and bananas.

    Thanks

    supermarket downtown

We had an excellent market, Market on Market, but alas it closed . They still have La Bodega on Market, you could give them a call. However, I was stuck once with a foot cast and no car and called ValuMarket at the Mid City Mall (Bardstown Road) and they delivered for a small fee. They have some excellent local produce and specialty items as well.

    supermarket downtown

I live downtown and though I go to New Albany%26#39;s Meijer for my major grocery shopping, there%26#39;s a Kroger on 2nd Street. It%26#39;s a small Kroger and closes around 11pm, but it%26#39;s convenient. It does tend to be super-crowded and the lines can be very long. However, I like how close it is and it%26#39;s great when I run out of something and don%26#39;t necessarily want to go very far.

Thanks for your suggestion. Is the City View Market on Chestnut and 11th worth the trolley or bus ride? We%26#39;re at W. Jefferson and 3rd. which is closer?

That%26#39;s not in a good part of town . For that matter, the Kroger aforementioned isn%26#39;t exactly in a great are either, though if you take a cab it should be okay. But my question is why would you need to go to a grocery? Please take my advice and call ValuMarket. They have a website online and I suggest that you place an order which includes some of our locally produced items. Heck, email me at this name at aol dot com and I will gladly BRING you those items, ok?

Advice taken. Thanks for the offer. See what you mean.

Linda is right. Not sure where you are downtown, but if you are near the Galt or Hyatt etc., the cab ride to ValuMarket in the Highlands wouldn%26#39;t be but a couple bucks more. It%26#39;s where I do about half of my shopping.

A couple of blocks further than ValuMarket, you could ask the cabbie to take you to Burger%26#39;s Market on the corner of Grinstead %26amp; Ray (next to Collegiate school).

It%26#39;s small, family owned and run. Good butcher %26amp; cheese selection. Excellent produce. They have items that are difficult to find at the chain stores (like HP Sauce etc.) They also have a lot of heat %26amp; eat stuff that%26#39;s made on-site. ...And I hear Saturday %26amp; Wednesday are the fried chicken sandwich days. Although I%26#39;ve never tried them since they always sell out by the time we get there. Only open until 7pm.

Thanks all. You%26#39;ve been very helpful. In New York there are cabs on the streets and you just raise your arm and they stop if available. Probably in front of the Hyatt there are cabs, how do I get back from these outlying supermarkets? Have the cab wait, or call a cab company?

Are there any movie theatres downtown? Fandango gives a few art houses, but no regular movie theatres. Do we need to cab a ride to a movie theatre too?

    Newyorker,

Here%26#39;s the number for my favorite cab driver. His name is Herman. My friends and I use him all the time. Tell him your a friend of the blonde girls on Dublin %26amp; Sherwood. 648-4364. Oh crap. I just noticed that his card says he%26#39;s not in service on Mon %26amp; Tue.

There is a movie theater in the same complex as ValuMarket. Baxter Ave. Theaters. It is on the backside of the mall.

ValuMarket is not really out-lying. It%26#39;s in the major restaurant/pub row area of Louisville. Baxter Ave/Bardstown Rd.

Although it%26#39;s possible that you could spot a cab on the road in front of ValuMarket. I%26#39;d either have the cab wait. Or have him come back at a certain time. Otherwise, Yellow Cab%26#39;s number is 636-5511. You should add it to your cell phone list.

There are a number of bars %26amp; casual restaurants within a block of ValuMarket. You could always get your things and tell them that you%26#39;re going to wait in one of those if there%26#39;s much of a wait time.

The BackDoor Bar - is in the same complex as ValuMarket. The bartenders will call you a cab.

The Highland Tap Room - is directly across the street.

Heinie Brother%26#39;s Coffee is across the street. Have someone point the way to you.

Ramsey%26#39;s Cafe - is also right across the street.

Kashmir Indian - is also across the street.

You should honestly just take a cab up and walk around and explore the area a bit before doing your grocery shopping. It%26#39;s a good walking area.

There is a Kroger downtown in a not-so-safe area, but you could probably get what you need there. I would recommened the valu market though.

    Thank you for the info!

I ate at Ms. Scarlett%26#39;s Restaurant one time. The salad bar had almost nothing on it and our food was really burnt bad. Is this normal or was it just a bad day?

Patti%26#39;s has become so hit and miss. For years it was wonderful every time we went then a couple years ago we started getting bad service and food, about every other time we went. When it is good it is really good but you pay way to much at that place to take the chance on it being good!

One time we got chicken tenders that were so hard you could not bite into them. The waitress said she would take them back and get us something else. The supervisor came over and said they have to be cooked that long to be done and the batter is a beer batter that is darker that is why they are black! Seriously!

The store never has very many cakes, pies, and the big bread any more.

I do love the area but will eat at Cindys Catfish house in Dover on the way from now on.

I agree about Patti%26#39;s. There was a time when it was really good but over the last 2 years not so much.We live only about 35 minutes away and we used to like to bring guests there but no longer. The atmosphere is still fun but the food has really gone down in quality. Not even the pork chop is as good as it once was. I have heard they have a hard time keeping kitchen help and Chef%26#39;s.We took guests there on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and the food was terrible. What a disappointment!

    Cabin needed for Thanksgiving

Looking for a cabin to rent this Thanksgiving within 2 hours of Lexington for 6. Tried reaching Shadow Mountain Mist per previous post and they have apparently gone out of business.

    Cabin needed for Thanksgiving

Check out VRBO. There are several rental properties in and around Lexington.

    Cabin needed for Thanksgiving

    Hello,

You might want to try nbcabins.com. It%26#39;s Natural Bridge Cabin Company located in Slade Kentudky. They have lots of cabins to rent and some accept pets if that is of interest to you. Natural Bridge State Park is there and they have really good food in the lodge. The area is beautiful and just a little over an hour from Lexington. Nancy

We have friends that own a cabin just outside of Lexington that sleeps 6. Visit their website at:

    http://www.onealcabin.com/index.htm

    Good luck!

Have you checked out Edgewater resort at Taylorsville Lake? Brand new lake front cottages with golf nearby restaurants and other amenities. Check it out at www.edgewatertaylorsvillelake.com . I have two 2-bedroom cottages for rent there (#4 and #17) and I will personally give you a $50 rebate per cabin if you will request them, stay in them and then send me a paid receipt for 3 nights or more showing that you have stayed in one or both of them. This offer is a personal one to promote the rental of my two cottages and is not a promotion of Edgewater. My address and phone number appear below. This personal offer expires December 31, 2007 unless renewed by me. Edgewater also has 3-bedroom cottages, if you prefer that. However, my 2-bedroom cottages each have a king bed, two twins and a trundle bed and so sleep 5 very comfortably. They have two full baths, a hot tub and gas fireplace, two TVs, washer and dryer, and come fully furnished with everything you will need except food, and the management will even buy your food for you (for a charge, of course), if you%26#39;d like, and have it waiting for you. These are very nicely furnished, brand new cottages and are not far from Lexington. Check %26#39;em out! Call me or the resort if you have additional questions. Thanks for your consideration. Tell your friends!

I know Thanksgiving has passed but I found this site which seems to have some good Kentucky Cabin Rentals:

    %26lt;a href=';www.rentittoday.com/vacation_rentals.php';%26gt;Vacation Rentals%26lt;/a%26gt;

It%26#39;s a shame that Shadow Mountain Mist went out of business as the pictures on their site looked fabulous.

    Lexington Activities - Jan. 16th - 18th

    Hello all!

I will be visiting Lexington this coming weekend by myself and I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions for activities going on this weekend? (Preferably indoors, I think it%26#39;s going to be extremely cold)

I would love the inside scoop on maybe some plays going on in town?

I am already planning on hitting up Joseph-Beth and the Kentucky Theatre. :)

    Lexington Activities - Jan. 16th - 18th

I am not too sure of specifics, but here are some suggestions...

Maybe check out a band at the Dame. (www.dameky.com) I think The Features are playing while you are here and they are pretty good.

Check out the Nude 2009 art exhibit (www.lexingtonartleague.com).

There is a new play about Mary Todd Lincoln that premiers on the 15th. It%26#39;s called The Last of Mrs. Lincoln. (www.studioplayers.com). Mary Todd Lincoln was Abraham Lincoln%26#39;s wife and a native of Lexington.

I don%26#39;t see too many special things going on around this time, but there should still be plenty to do while you are in town. Downtown has a lot to offer in terms of restaurants and bars, so I would reccommend spending some time down there. There are distilleries and historic homes to tour as well as art galleries and boutiques. Though Keeneland is not running, you should still check it out. There is always off track betting, but you may be able to see horses working out too. Let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you have a great time!

    Lexington Activities - Jan. 16th - 18th

Might find something here as well.

    One Day in Louisville

We will be in Louisville on Friday March 6, for one day only. What suggestions do you have for us to see and a good/fun place for lunch and/or dinner? We are a family of 4 including my 16 yr old son and 13 yr old daughter.

    One Day in Louisville

Lunch or dinner at Lynn%26#39;s Paradise Cafe. The kids will like all the kitchy decorations. The adults will like the food. http://www.lynnsparadisecafe.com/

A tour of the Louisville Slugger Factory located downtown.

    http://www.sluggermuseum.org/

While you%26#39;re downtown, you should do a walk through of the lobby at The 21C Hotel. They have a constantly changing contemperary art display that%26#39;s open to the public and free. Several of the art installations are interactive. The kids will enjoy them. http://www.21cmuseum.org/museum/default.aspx

Churchill Downs won%26#39;t be running at that time, but The Kentucky Derby Museum will be open. I understand it%26#39;s really good.

    http://www.derbymuseum.org/

You could also take a ride on the Bell of Louisville if it%26#39;s running at that time.

Waterfront Park has bicycle rentals and bike paths.

Louisville Slugger Field is a great place to see a baseball game if there%26#39;s a home game that evening. They usually start around 7pm. It sits at the far end of Waterfront Park.

Right around the corner from Slugger Field is the Louisville Skate Park if your kids are into skateboarding. It%26#39;s one of the largest in the country I believe.

    One Day in Louisville

I forgot to mention to check out the Go Lists on this site for Louisville. The sites I mentioned were just off the top of my head. There%26#39;s a lot more to see %26amp; do depending upon your interests.

Also let us know what price range %26amp; type of food you%26#39;re looking for and we%26#39;ll give you more specific restaurant recommendations. Louisville has many great dining options.

March could be really cold...or not! Do check the golists as many links are in there. The Belle only runs May-October.

Thanks! March will be really warm compared to what we are in right now. Yesterday morning we woke up to -25 temps (-40 with windchill) and this morning it was -32 (close to -45 with windchill).
