Depending upon how long you are going to be in Louisville and how much of the area you want to see, you may want to rent a car. You wouldn%26#39;t want to walk from U of L to downtown. It%26#39;s probably 3 miles or so.

The Granville Inn Bar %26amp; Grill is within walking distance of campus. Maybe 3-4 blocks. Good burgers %26amp; pub grub.

A little further away, in ';Old Louisville'; (the area between U of L and downtown) is The Third Avenue Cafe. It%26#39;s probably about 10 blocks. I%26#39;d take a cab. http://www.thirdavecafe.com/

Some dinner options that are reasonably close to campus. Also in Old Louisville. I%26#39;d suggest a cab rather than trying to walk from campus. Especially in the evening.

There are also lots of dining options downtown or in the area around Bardstown Road (also referred to as The Highlands).

If you%26#39;re staying overnight, there are several B%26amp;B%26#39;s in the Old Louisville area. Just do a google search on Old Louisville B%26amp;B%26#39;s.

There are plenty of hotels in the airport/fairgrounds area. Just be aware that it%26#39;s fairly industrial. Not really much in the way of non-chain restaurants etc.

Best of luck! My husband went to U of L and I attended grad school there.

I agree with the previous poster. Depends on how long you are here and how much you want to see. Unfortunately, Louisville isn%26#39;t all that friendly for non-drivers. Also, more dining options if you have a car and head to the the Highlands area though the restaurants mentioned in Old Louisville are certainly satisfactory.

You can likely get a rental at the airport pretty inexpensively. I just rented a car for an upcoming trip to San Francisco for $19 per day (plus tax) via Priceline.

First, I love your moniker....willbebroke!!!

I, too, graduated from UofL and I transferred from a small college which would have left me broke. When you say ';end of the month'; I%26#39;m thinking COLD! Check weather.com before you come. We have kooky weather and it changes daily.

I second Third Avenue Cafe for great food and fun atmosphere. You may want to check with the University as well; often they offer discount housing for visiting families. At several places I visited with my daughter last year, special housing was reserved in grad dorms and apartment units.

Best of luck to you. It was a fun but stressful time yet when they find the right ';fit'; it%26#39;s terrific!

Thanks all for your information.. I guess i will rent a car. We are only there for one night. She is meeting with the lacrosse team and then we are going to the louisville/WVU bball game.

You%26#39;ll be better off with the car, for sure.

U of L is very close to Churchill Downs also, so you may want to try to squeeze in a visit there. No live racing in January, but you can do the tour through the Kentucky Derby Museum adjacent to Gate 1 at 700 Central Ave.

I like a restaurant just on the other side of I-65 from campus called The Cottage Inn. Arguably the best fried chicken in town. They use pans, so it%26#39;ll take a minimum of 30 minutes but it%26#39;s worth it. It%26#39;s at Eastern Parkway and Bradley.

My personal favorite local tourist destination is the Louisville Slugger Museum %26amp; Factory at 8th %26amp; Main downtown. You can watch them make a baseball bat and even order special request models from a number of size choices.

Good luck on your visit and enjoy the basketball game. The tickets are VERY hard to get!
